Sophie is independent and is completely capable of taking charge of most situations. There are quite a few rather large differences between Sophie in the book and in the movie. To be entirely honest I didn't really care for Sophie all that much the first time I saw the movie. I didn't hate her, but she didn't seem like an overly wonderful character. It wasn't until after I read the book that I really gained a proper appreciation for her. She is so much stronger and just all around more interesting.
So I decided to make this costume right after I finished reading the book. The dress itself is made out of a polyester wool blend. The bloomers, petticoat and apron are all made out of a cotton broadcloth. The lace trim on the petticoat, bloomers and collar are all matching cotton eyelet. All of the patterns were drafted by me and I have to say I am quite happy with how everything turned out! Also I love my fabric covered buttons! One thing I am not happy with is the wig.. I was trying to cut it without a razor comb or thinning scissors, so the layers are... not layered and the cut turned out all choppy. I suppose it works with the whole "Calcifer burning her hair off" but I would really like to re cut the wig! I also made the Calcifer! He is just yellow funfur which I gradient dyed after it was sewn together and then stuck google eyes on! Calcifer can be seen here ^^
